A Birthday Lunch with Josiah

Because Josiah's birthday fell during Thanksgiving break this year, we got to celebrate with his class early! His birthday party was going to be later that night, so it was a full day of fun! And because it was Friday, even Daddy got to go with us to take cupcakes to his class! We took lemon cupcakes with cream cheese frosting (his favorite...he requested it for his karate birthday cake, but Publix doesn't make lemon cake - can you believe it?)

Operation Christmas Child Shoeboxes!

I had been SO looking forward to doing our Operation Christmas Child shoeboxes this year. And had been looking forward to it since last year. I had watched a video last year AFTER I had finished our couple of boxes (we did 4 shoeboxes last year - 1 for each of our kids) and it was so inspiring and convicting at the same time. This lady did 40 shoeboxes for about $40!! She kept a box in her closet and just kept filling it up with things for the shoeboxes throughout the year. Flip-flops she picked up on clearance for 50 cents. All kinds of different FREE things from the drugstores that we couponers get - toothpaste, soap, toothbrushes. Samples of all different things. I was so inspired last year - I had just started this extreme couponing and thought "man! that would be awesome to work on it all year long and see what I end up with!" Well, we didn't get 40 boxes, but we had a GREAT time doing it! I've already started filling up my box again for next year! My kids were aware of it all year long too, so this was a great family giving project.

All of our supplies - ready to be filled!!

Packed and ready to go to a child somewhere that needs to hear the Good News of Jesus! Each box will have a gospel tract put in that's written in that child's language! Isn't that awesome! We gave our donation for shipping online so that we could track the boxes - so far we know that 4 of the boxes were delivered to Guyana, Ecuador, Belize, and Abkhazia (never even heard of that one!).

The Governor's Cup Half-Marathon

We were all up bright and early on Saturday morning to cheer David on for his third half-marathon!! He had trained hard and was ready to go!
Didn't he get a cool number?? :)
That's the starting line up by the balloons (and you get a smart taste for the course - LOTS of hills...ugh!)
Callie and Caleb were bundled up and ready to watch for Daddy at about Mile 1.5. My friend Jenn let the boys spend the night with her and then she took them to their Upward flag football game. I felt very torn between watching David's race and seeing the boys' last game. I finally picked David - after all, I saw the other 5 games of their season! :)

I almost missed David running by us at Mile 1.5 (he's right behind the SUV - see his black shorts with the green stripe?) - I was dealing with a 3 year old who was whining about her jacket...
There he goes - on pace, looking good!!
Saw David at about Mile 4 - we were heading to our next spot to watch him and got lucky seeing him cross the intersection! :)
Some chocolate chip muffins kept this one happy for a while!
While we were waiting, we saw Indiana Jones run by us! :) Was running with a lasso and golden skull and everything! (We saw him at the finish too - he really did run the whole thing dressed like that!)
Here comes Daddy! We had waited a LONG time at this point - we knew something happened, but wasn't sure what. Was VERY relieved to see him running towards us - but as he passed us he said it had been awful. He got some really bad chest pains - heartburn - and it just wouldn't go away. Could not get it to clear up and eventually had to stop and walk a few times (which he NEVER EVER does). He was spitting mad. He couldn't ever get his original pace back after that and was so ticked off!!!
He finished...but it was not the finish he had anticipated!
We saw "Where's Waldo" too! :)
Callie wasn't super excited when she realized her daddy was all sweaty!
He really didn't want to take this picture. (SO mad about his time). I tried to encourage him and tell him that every race is not a PR - but he was so trained up and ready and then this random flukey thing. Very odd. He thinks it was from the spaghetti I made the night before - I made it with Italian sausage (which we've had a bunch of times) and he thinks maybe it just didn't settle right. He did great though - he finished another half-marathon (and it's not like his time was horrible!) I told him it's the curse of the 3rd one...my 3rd one was my worst one too!!

A Happier Day!

Lots of smiles today. Just what we ALL needed!! This little girl REALLY loves when it's her daddy's day off...especially because she has him ALMOST to herself while the boys are at school! :) We went to the running store downtown to pick up David's bib number and race bag - his half marathon is tomorrow! :)
We drove the course - it always seems so long when you're driving it...and you think to yourself "i have to RUN this whole thing?" I'm not even running it and I still get all fluttery thinking about it for him. He's excited though and feeling good (well, except for the fact that he felt something "snap" in two of his toes when he was running on Tuesday....) Had his pre-race lunch at chili's (just like beth & i did before ours). Callie & Caleb ate free thanks to free kids meals coupons we had from football, and so it was almost like a really cheap date! :)
We spent a lot of time playing outside this afternoon. The boys went to karate tonight (a different class time than they usually do, but it's open to kids if they need to "make up" a class...and since the boys weren't allowed to go last night, it worked out...) and then we all had our carb-loading spaghetti dinner! Yum! Caleb's new favorite thing in life is ranch dressing - i let him dip some french fries in it at lunch today, and when we were putting it on our salads, he started asking for more tonight at dinner! I've created a monster!!! :)

The boys are spending the night at my friend Jenn's house (THANK YOU Jenn!!) so that she can take them to their football games in the morning and I can watch David ROCK his race! :) The younger two kids will get up early with us to head to the start! I'll let you know how he does - he's going to be AWESOME! :)

i think i've figured it out

i've been pondering all day on this little "situation" that occurred yesterday. when i was describing to david this morning exactly WHAT all transpired yesterday, i was having a hard time putting my finger on why I was so upset. There was the obvious- the fact that no one rested and that meant a longer, harder night for me. The fact that no one did what they were supposed to do. The fact that my closet was destroyed. The fact that special surprises and secrets that David and I have been planning for weeks were no longer going to be surprises. But it was more than that. I woke up today and still had this pit in my stomach. And felt that way all day long.

I get that it sounds totally shallow. My kids got into their Christmas presents. Big deal. We are healthy. We have more than what we need to survive. I mean - there are kids without PARENTS for crying out loud. Kids without clean water to drink. Kids whose dads or moms are soldiers and are putting their lives on the line every day for us. We've got friends whose parenst won't be with them on christmas this year because of several different circumstances. So what's the big deal?

I think I've figured it out. Here's what I've come up with:

1. I LOVE surprises. I LOVE to be surprised by something. I love to look forward to it. I love to wait and anticipate. So it REALLY upset me that this aspect of Christmas was being taken away. Still pretty shallow, but I think explains why I took it so personally.

2. The deceit and disobedience involved. This is being nipped in the bud. Enough said.

3. The biggest reason is because I think my kids have too much of a feeling of entitlement. That they deserve whatever they want. I'm not sure how this has happened - but we've got to get it taken care of. I'm sure part of it is the fact that their birthdays are RIGHT before Christmas - so it's a LOT of talking about what they want. It's pretty sickening. I don't feel like we spoil our kids by ANY stretch, but obviously they are not getting the point that it's NOT all about them. We're going to be dealing HARD with this one.

Because NONE of this is okay. I think I'm done with these depressing posts for now.

remembering why i love them...

if you're reading the title and thinking this is going to be some sweet, precious post walking down memory lane recounting all the fabulously wonderful things about my kids, well - you're a bit off. it's more like i had to call mom last night on the way to church for her to tell me one good reason why to keep 4 of her grandchildren alive. (KIDDING - don't anyone call CPS, but I was so flippin' mad!) Allow me to back up and start at the beginning of my day.

Had a much better run yesterday morning. Can't really tell you why, but it felt good for whatever reason. Knew I had a lot to get accomplished that morning, because we were planning to meet friends at the zoo for the morning! It's been several weeks, and we all know how much we LOVE the zoo, so that was our plan. However, Callie was in some cantankerous mood over nothing all morning. Did not want to get dressed, did not want to wear the clothes that I finally picked to make her get dressed, did not want her hair done - you get the picture. just a total dramatic mess all morning. i was totally trying to use the zoo to my best advantage, but she still was having a really hard time. caleb was following david around most of the morning pretty whiny too. not happy times here. We got in the car to head to the grocery store to get my couponing done - hoping to be in and out. it was not a long list this week, but some great deals (spent $38 and saved $101 - love that!) That was about the extent of the happiness at the store. we were riding in one of those 2 seater car shopping carts (do you know what I mean...i realize i'm rambling) and hoping that would be enough happiness-inducing to get us through...but it wasn't. callie could NOT keep her hands off of Caleb's head...and he's learning to retaliate, so again...big mess.

We got back in the car and realized i left the diaper bag and the snack bag at home that i needed for the zoo. we drove home...i'm still trying to salvage my morning with friends at the zoo - telling callie not to blow it and lose her priviledge, etc. After getting back on the road, caleb starts wailing again - callie had pulled his hair - and that was enough. We turned around (callie said "now what did you forget mommy?" and i told her the zoo was not happening that day. We went home, put Caleb to bed, and had a talk about our attitudes.

The rest of the morning was okay. Lots of books read, some games played, laundry put away. Caleb took a great 2 1/2 hour nap and we all enjoyed lunch. We had to go up to the boys' school to return some library books there and so we picked them up from school about 10 minutes early. I figured it would get us home a bit early and get settled since we had a late night at church ahead of us.

We got home, played outside for about 30 minutes and then told everyone it was time to head inside for rest time. We had regular choir practice, christmas choir practice, and then had to stay late for band practice which meant 9-9:30 pm before we'd head home. To make a long story short (too late for that I know), NOBODY slept. Not even Caleb. (sidenote - i know he's transitioning to only needing 1 nap.....was trying to make it 1 more week until biblestudy is over...). I had put jacob in my bed, josiah in their room, and callie in her room. i knew they were all tired and needed to rest. Again, don't care if they sleep or not (although i knew they NEEDED to in this case), but they needed some rest time. Nobody obeyed. I was downstairs working on my biblestudy and heard all kinds of chaos upstairs. They were all disciplined accordingly.

Finally, they were allowed downstairs and we did homework, read our books, and got dinner on the table. I headed upstairs while they were eating to change my shirt before choir (because it was covered in sweet baby snot and drool) and discovered that my closet had been totally ransacked. i stood there with my mouth hanging open. My 3 bags of operation christmas child stuff - dumped everywhere. ALL OF MY CHRISTMAS PRESENTS that i've been buying and hiding away totally laid out all over the floor. seriously i think steam was coming out of my ears. jacob had climbed up on my shelves, taken every bag down and went through everything. (he later told me that callie was in there too). i was so mad - so annoyed - so heartsick over the fact that all of these fun surprises that we'd been working on were now ruined. and did i say mad?

it was all i could do to get them in the car and head for church. i told them no one was allowed to talk (they all fell asleep on the way...of course! they were supposed to take a nap, remember?) I punished jacob and told him i was taking everything back - that they weren't going to have any presents because he had ruined it - and i was going to give all their presents to other children that know how to obey. i do feel slightly guilty for trying to make him feel guilty...and for lying in the process...but i just wanted him to grasp the enormity of it all. maybe i'm going overboard here. that was the state that i called my mom in.

the rehearsals went well, but i was obviously not completely there or available. i had told the kids that instead of playing at band practice, they were going to have to sit in a chair the whole time and wait until we were done. josiah obeyed after whining initially. jacob got up a few times and then got in trouble for it and decided i was for real and obeyed after that. callie didn't obey....and i was stuck because i was having to hold on to caleb too. finally i was holding on to her hand and wouldn't let go...and she started screaming. that makes for a conducive band practice doesn't it? i packed the kids up and we left. got them home and in bed as fast as i could and was in bed 2 minutes later. left the house totally destroyed. david got home shortly after i did and was surprised to see me getting in bed. i told him "I'm done". that's all i said. poor guy - probably thought i had totally lost it.

i set my alarm for 5 am this morning to get the house back in order, get a run in, and get things prepared for biblestudy. i came downstairs to see that my sweet husband had already cleaned everything up downstairs - even vaccuumed for me. he loves me. even in my crazy, ridiculous, make no sense frustrated attitude, he loves me.

biblestudy was good. perspective is back. still really mad about the whole situation. told the boys they were not allowed to go to karate today (they were VERY upset about that). told them we were going to have rest time again today and they would have another chance to obey....i think they get it now. i told them i had a lot of fun things that i can take away and we can just do work all the time until they can learn that i mean what i say and then need to obey. don't i sound like a horrible mom? i just have had it. so it's back to the basics around here. probably don't want to call me anytime and ask how i'm doing! we're going on vacation soon and i think we're going to be in boot camp until then getting some of these attitudes under control. sigh.

i do love them though. even in spite of all this. parenting is hard. they don't tell you this stuff at baby showers!

regular life

so far, it's been one of those nice, "regular life" kind of days. i rather enjoy them. yesterday i felt like i was able to get a lot accomplished. it's my big cleaning day (and BIG it was after that mess that was created over the weekend!), but i was actually able to get it all done! there are lots of weeks where something doesn't get finished - floors, bathrooms, something - but i actually did finish it. kids came home and got their responsibilities finished up (homework, piano), and we were able to play outside. all was well until callie sort of fell to pieces over nothing (it was a no nap day) and we had to come back inside and fast forward to bath & bed time. but all in all, a good day. got the rest of my clothes switched out last night (summer to winter) and am looking forward to the fact that i'll be able to fit in clothes i haven't worn in the last two years after being prego/having caleb!!

good morning so far. kids are both napping right now. had storytime at the library - and we read & sang "he's got the whole world in his hands". i LOVE living in the Bible belt!! been on the computer alot today with details for my kids choir program/presentation. tshirt sizes, dates to remember, mailings to go out, answering parents asking stupid questions that they would have known the answers to had they READ the emails/letters i sent out, etc. :) ran this morning and it was ROUGH. don't know why - it was 6 miles that felt like 16!! legs felt heavy most of the way. wore a long sleeved shirt with my shorts for the first time this season! definitely a chill in the air! :)

He wants it in the blog book...

David and his favorite new addition to our family! :) He loves it (mostly because it's sporty-looking and NOT family-car looking). I love it (mostly because it's a honda and practical and will last forever and gets great gas mileage). Very thankful. He's going to be SO happy next summer to have air conditioning again...it's been a long, hot, sweaty 4 years without AC! :)

So that YOU don't ever get behind...

This is what you must be prepared for if you ever let yourself get 6 weeks behind on your blog....you will have to let your boys (and husband) play a ridiculous amount of Super Mario Brothers on the Wii, your daughter watch more Dora that you thought was survivable, and your baby boy toddle around and undo everything in your whole house! But it's all worth it - because now I'm caught up....and I have a lot to do tomorrow on my cleaning day! :)
